THE FARMER BEHIND

The farm was founded by Gloria Gummerus, a Kenyan entrepreneur, and her Finnish husband Jarmo, who originally met while working in different industries before deciding to build a life around agriculture and coffee.

The project began in 2004, inspired by travels to Rwanda and by Gloria’s own connection to coffee culture, they planted their first coffee trees on a 16 hectare farm in 2011, marking the beginning of Sakami Coffee as a specialty coffee project.

The name Sakami itself is a combination of the names of the couple’s children, reflecting the family nature of the farm. Over the years, the farm has expanded its coffee production to tens of thousands of trees while also growing crops such as macadamia, avocado and vegetables, creating a diversified farming system that provides year round employment for workers in the community.

Sustainability plays a central role in Sakami’s approach. The farm uses circular agricultural practices, including composting livestock manure and recycling coffee pulp as organic fertilizer. Solar powered irrigation systems and careful water management help reduce environmental impact while improving farm efficiency.

Beyond the farm itself, Sakami has developed into a community driven project. Gloria works closely with neighboring farmers, providing coffee seedlings, lending processing equipment and encouraging growers to taste and understand their own coffee quality, something many had never experienced before. The farm also serves as a hub where smaller producers can process and sell their coffee together to reach international markets.

Empowering women is another key pillar of the project. Gloria has been actively involved in initiatives that support female coffee farmers, helping them gain more control over their income and professional recognition within the coffee sector. Through Sakami and related programs, women in the region have been encouraged to plant their own coffee trees and participate more directly in the specialty coffee value chain.
